For Khair Muhammad Kumbher, it began with trusting his own ears. In 2008, in Khipro, a small town in Sindh’s Sanghar district, he sat at a second-hand computer and tried to work out why professional recordings sounded full while his own sounded thin. Nobody in his family worked in music, but his household let him get on with it. There were no restrictions at home, he says. Whatever I wanted to do, I was allowed to do it. Learning Without a Teacher He taught himself editing, then mixing, then mastering, using downloaded software and tutorials watched on slow connections. Singers from Kumbhar Para let him work on their recordings for free, and the neighbourhood began to trust the teenager who could make a rough vocal sound like a record. An Hour Every Night That trust was earned after hours. As his family’s needs grew, he took a private job and kept music for the evenings. Even when I was tired, I would sit for an hour and work on something, he says. I think that hour every night is the real reason I am still here. Strangers, Money and a New View of the Industry The pandemic of 2020 changed the terms. He stopped going to work and spent roughly two years freelancing in audio editing and voice-over for clients he never met. For the first time, strangers paid him international rates for skills he had built for nothing, and he saw how the global creative economy runs: through platforms, metadata, contracts, and payment systems. Testing the System Himself In July 2021 he released an instrumental single and a ten-track album, both titled 8th Night. A second album, Painful Heart, was noted by BroadwayWorld later that year. They were an experiment more than a bid for stardom. “I learned more from uploading my own album than from any article I read,” he says. Uploading, he found, is easy. The difficulty lies in ownership, royalties, and who to ask when something goes wrong. Sindh Distro: Building the Answer In 2023 he co-founded Sindh Distro with Sher Muhammad. The distribution company carries music from Sindh and beyond onto global streaming platforms. Its corporate vehicle, KS Distribution (Private) Limited, was incorporated in 2023, and a UK counterpart followed in 2024. He serves as chief executive. Credits, Splits and Ownership In his business, trust is a matter of detail. Every release is checked for its unique identifier, contributor shares, ownership of the composition and the master, and the territories where it may be sold. Every release carries ownership, splits and credits, he says. Nobody fixes it later, because by then nobody remembers. His production house, KS Production, handles recording, mixing, and mastering. Building an Association from Scratch Individual companies could only go so far. The sector had nobody to negotiate with platforms, educate artists on copyright, or speak to the government. So Khair Muhammad, Sher Muhammad and their colleagues built one: PUMPA, the first federally licensed trade body for independent music, Pakistan Federal licensed and incorporated in 2026. Its head office is in Mirpurkhas, and membership is open to labels, producers, production houses, rights holders, and distributors. Khair Muhammad is Vice Chairman. An International Door Opens On 18 February 2026, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN) admitted PUMPA alongside Ukraine’s SPILNA. WIN chief executive Noemí Planas said the additions extended the representation of independent voices into new territories. PUMPA has since joined WIN’s Asia-Pacific Alliance. When Trust Comes Under Attack Those meetings revealed a threat to trust itself: AI voice cloning, fake tracks, streaming farms, re-uploaded catalogues, and altered metadata. “We thought fraud was something that happened to big labels in other countries,” he says. Then we looked at our own data and realised our artists were being targeted precisely because nobody here was checking. Turning Findings into Action The response was the Anti Music Fraud Task Force (AMFTF), where he is Head of Operations. Suspicious cases are logged, verified by a human reviewer, and reported to platforms where warranted. According to AMFTF, its detection tool is now used by rights holders in several countries. A tool does not replace judgement,” he says. “It tells us where to look. Stages Still to Come In November 2026 he is due to represent PUMPA at the IMCJ Asia-Pacific summit in Tokyo and at WIN’s WINCON conference in Toronto. At home, the association wants simpler copyright registration, consultation before new taxes on online earnings, and fair licensing terms. Where the Story Leads Khair Muhammad does not see his journey as an exception. In his view, towns like Khipro are full of people with the same talent and patience, who lack structure rather than ability. The hour he kept for music each night has grown into a distribution company, a production house, a trade body, and a task force against fraud. I sat down in 2008 and I have not really got up since, he says.

[39

post-10783","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entertainment
["GET
