Alphabet\u2019s Google joined a growing list of technology firms to sign a deal with \u200bthe US Department of Defence to use its artificial intelligence models \u200cfor classified work, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter. The agreement allows the Pentagon to use Google\u2019s AI for \u201cany lawful government purpose\u201d, the report added, \u200bputting it alongside OpenAI and Elon Musk\u2019s xAI, which also have deals to supply \u200bAI models for classified use. Classified networks are used to handle a \u2060wide range of sensitive work, including mission planning and weapons targeting. The Pentagon signed \u200bagreements worth up to $200 million each with major AI labs in 2025, including Anthropic, OpenAI, \u200band Google. The Pentagon is seeking to preserve all flexibility in defence and not be limited by warnings from the technology\u2019s creators against powering weapons with unreliable AI. Google\u2019s agreement requires \u200bit to help in adjusting the company\u2019s AI safety settings and filters at \u200bthe government\u2019s request. The contract includes language noting \u201cthe parties agree that the AI System is not \u200cintended \u2060for, and should not be used for, domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons (including target selection) without appropriate human oversight and control\u201d, according to the report, but also adds that the \u201cAgreement does not confer any right to control or veto lawful \u200bGovernment operational decision-making\u201d.
