Flight operations at Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) in Karachi were badly affected on Monday as nine international and domestic flights failed to depart due to operational and technical issues. Among the cancelled flights were two Emirates Airlines flights, EK-609 and EK-605, which were scheduled to land at Dubai International Airport from Karachi. Additionally, Thai Airways flight TG-342 to Bangkok, Thailand, was cancelled. Air Sial also had four flights affected: PF-141 and PF-145 to Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, and PF-121 and PF-123 to New Islamabad International Airport, Islamabad. Furthermore, Pakistan International Airlines flights PK-306 to Lahore and PK-501 to Turbat were also cancelled, disrupting both domestic and international travel schedules. The cancellations highlight ongoing operational challenges at Jinnah International Airport. Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan announced plans to introduce a satellite-guided navigation system for flights to Skardu, Gilgit, and Chitral by June 2026. This system aims to address chronic weather-related delays and cancellations that have long affected flights to these remote northern airports. The initiative is expected to improve flight safety, reduce disruptions, and enhance overall passenger experience for travelers heading to the northern regions of the country. The destinations are among Pakistan’s most visited tourist sites and serve as gateways to the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. Gilgit-Baltistan, which borders China, also holds strategic significance as part of the northern corridor linking the two neighbors.
